Neilanjan Nandi, MD, FACP, is gastroenterologist who sees patients in Center City Philadelphia and Rittenhouse Square. He is director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Drexel.

Dr. Nandi is passionate about the quality of care provided to patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Utilizing advances such as chromoendoscopy to survey the intestine for potentially pre-cancerous lesions and small bowel video capsule endoscopy, Dr. Nandi is able to bring the highest excellence in care to his patients. Managing acute flares is important, but prevention of future flares and complications of therapy, Dr. Nandi believes, are key aspects of providing good clinical care.

Looking beyond the intestine, Dr. Nandi believes that an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to IBD is critical in providing truly comprehensive care. This involves a close working environment with not only colorectal surgeons, medical subspecialists and radiologists but also with nutritionists, fitness professionals, therapists and complementary medicine specialists. This approach allows Drexel Gastroenterology to be mindful of the entire body, not just the intestine.

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) and the study of the gut microbiome, especially in the context of modulating chronic illness, are Dr. Nandi’s areas of research interest. Drexel University’s established frozen donor stool bank promotes efficient and easy access to FMT. Patients afflicted with recurrent and/or refractory Clostridium difficile infection (R-CDI) may choose known or pre-screened, anonymous donors to provide their specimens for FMT. Success rates for FMT for R-CDI are around 90% with one fecal transplant. Developments in next generation encapsulated gut bacteria for oral ingestion and intestinal delivery are currently under way.

The application of interactive technologies to enhance clinical education of patients, students and health care professionals is another research initiative that Dr. Nandi explores. His hope is to appropriately utilize these technologies to raise more awareness about inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer screening and prevention.
